LONDON - The Williams sisters have won a grand slam each this year against the odds and if they avoid injury they could return to the top of the world rankings, Wimbledon champion Venus said. She and sister Serena, 25, ruled womens tennis at the beginning of the decade and have won 14 grand slam titles between them but injuries over the last couple of years sent their rankings plummeting. They have made their presence felt again in 2007, however, with Serena capturing the Australian Open title while ranked 81 in the world and Venus winning Wimbledon on Saturday ranked 31. Venus said that as long as they were fit, they could beat anyone with their aggression and power. I think Serena and I, we have a way of shutting the next player out. We get the first shot. We have the say. Thats how we play, she said. As long as were fit we just have so much to give on the court. Both have sometimes been accused of devoting too much of their energy to their off-court interests, such as interior and fashion design and losing interest in the game but Venus said her latest Wimbledon title was the result of pure hard work. Theres a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes, she said. I started to realise ... how much harder I needed to work to get right back where I was. Both sisters have an unshakeable belief that they can succeed. Asked whether she had ever thought over the last two years that she might not win another grand slam title, Venus said: No, not at all. I never would doubt myself in that way. Her reaction after victory at the All England Club was: My sixth slam -- I want some more. She said her next target was a Fed Cup victory over Russia later this month and then her attention would turn to winning another grand slam. The U.S. Open would be great, she said.
