Did you know the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have not won a Grey Cup since 1990? That is so long ago, I was still playing. Steelers Harrison Jersey . They have had opportunities, playing in the Grey Cup in 1992, 1993, 2001 and 2007 but it has been 18 years since they have won, the longest drought of any CFL team. And now they have a new head coach, new assistant coaches and, more than anything else, a lot of new players. As the Bombers continue through training camp, 15 starters from the team that made the playoffs last year are not on the team this year, approximately one-third of the roster. Is that amount of turnover in football personnel too much to recover from to make a run at this years Grey Cup? That is a question that will be answered in July and August. Why do coaches get rid of players? More specifically, why do new coaches get rid of players more than established coaches? Well, there are always changes from one year to the next and that will never change. Players retire, they have opportunities in free agency and wish to take advantage or they are just tired of football. With coaches, they anticipate diminishing returns in the upcoming year. The player is one year older and perhaps not one year better and the new coaching staff wants a younger, better player. Money is always an issue. If the player is getting paid more than the value of his production, you will go with the cheaper player, feeling he can, at the very least, play as well as the expensive player, hopefully better. With the way the salary cap is enforced across the league, the money aspect is always an issue. Another reason is ratio. Some people hate it but I like it. Its our country and to have rules that state basically half of your roster must be Canadian, and that seven must start, gives jobs to Canadian citizens and I think thats great. Often certain positions are Canadian and certain positions are American and, over time, it really has not changed that dramatically. And a final reason is the head coach and his staff just does not like you. Your value to winning football is not equal to the fact you may be a jerk off the field, on the field and in the locker-room. Youre just too big of a pain in the neck to work with. It happens with every team, every year. Which brings us to Mike Kelly, the new head coach of the Blue Bombers. Is he qualified? Yes. The Bombers offensive coordinator from 1992-96 is experienced in personnel assessment and I sense a bit of a psychologist/psychiatrist in his own right. But he has to make it his team with players he can trust and believe in that will continue to improve from Game 1 to Game 18. You know what a football organization wants from its players. The obvious answer is on-field results but I think even more is dependability, a day-by-day maturity that results in on-field positive consistency. Teams dont expect to dominate opponents because its too competitive throughout the league. Just win every game by one point and every coach and management team will be ecstatic. Its not realistic, I know, but with 18 one-point wins, you would have the greatest regular season in CFL history. But coaches want you to show up for work, understand that it is work and improve every day. Dont be the last to arrive and the first to go. Be the first to arrive and the last to go and produce a confidence in the coaches that they can depend on you every day and in every way. Its tough to assess how successful the Bombers will be this year because its close to impossible to assess when a team will jell and work effectively together all the time. But its Year 1 and these will be Mike Kellys guys, the team that he has faith in. And what if Mike Kelly loses faith in one of his guys? Thats right, he will find new guys he does have faith in. And you keep doing it until you win, even by one point. Mikita Jersey . The Chara-Pacioretty situation is, hour by hour and day by day, evolving and it remains to be seen what impact it may have on how the game is played and/or governed. Roman Harper Jerseys . "At this time, the decision was made to shut him down for the rest of the regular season," team physician Dr. Andrew Parker said. Stastny is second on the Avalanche in scoring with 57 points on 22 goals and 35 assists in 74 games. He missed three previous games, two with a back injury and the other when he was ill. Steelers Evander Hood Jersey . - Chris Higgins didnt need much convincing before joining the Florida Panthers. Francisco Rodriguez Jersey . With 10 4-0s, Chinese lost only two sets in the matches. Chinese Ma Lin, four-time World Cup winner and twice finalist in the world championships, lost one set in his mens singles victory over Wang Zeng Yi, as the penholding Pole unleashed a string of killer shots. Suh Jersey . A macaque at a zoo. A study into our primate cousins found that male macaques pay for intercourse by using grooming as a currency. [Agencies] Michael Gumert of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore made the discovery in a 20-month investigation into 50 long-tailed macaques in Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia, New Scientist reports on Saturday. The C on his sweater completes all of Alex Ovechkins personal goals. Still left for the superstar Russian left wing and back-to-back Hart Trophy winner is an Olympic gold medal and a Stanley Cup championship, both of which are attainable this year. In a move that really was only a matter of time, Ovechkin debuted Tuesday night as the Washington Capitals captain, becoming the 14th player and first European in team history to bear the honor. Chris Clark was the captain until he was traded to Columbus last week. The Caps won in Ovechkins debut, beating Montreal, 4-2, Tuesday to snap a three-game losing skid. Alexander Semin scored twice and Tomas Fleischmann, in his first game at center, had a goal and two assists. Ovechkin was held off the scoresheet for just the eighth time this season. "Im proud. Its a big honor for me," Ovechkin said. "Im going to do my best, but still I dont want to concentrate on just having the C on my heart. Im going to do the same thing." Ovechkin, 24, becomes the third youngest captain in the NHL behind Pittsburghs Sidney Crosby, 22, and Chicagos Jonathan Toews, 21. Six of the 28 captains in the NHL are 25 or younger, including Columbus Rick Nash, Los Angeles Dustin Brown and Philadelphias Mike Richards. "Hes been the face of the franchise for a long time," Caps defenseman Tom Poti said. "Well deserved and well earned." Originally, GM George McPhee and coach Bruce Boudreau said they were going to take their time in making this selection out of respect for Clark and the letter. They also wanted to make sure they were picking the right guy, not just any guy because of his name or ability. It took all of seven days for them to decide because really, there is nobody in the dressing room more suited to be the Caps captain than Ovechkin. Even the rest of the team knows that. Boudreau said he had polled the team in recent days and Ovechkin was the unanimous choice. "Who else is it supposed to be but the biggest leader on our team," Fleischmann said. "We wanted it to be him." "They were really happy when I told them (Tuesday) morning and this doesnt happen too often, but the group got up and cheered," Boudreau said. "I had talked to a lot of them in the last couple of days and they said Alex was the only choice, Hes our leader and hes our guy." Washingtons free wheeling, fun-loving, high scoring ways are a direct reflection of their best player. Ovi has the respect of everybody in the dressing room for the way he plays, with his incredible mix of skill and power. And, he has basically single-handedly rejuvenated Washington, turning it into a marquee hockey markett and Verizon Center into a major home-ice advantage. Wilson Jersey. It helps, too, that Ovechkin is signed through the 2020-21 season. "The thing that sort of shows how he was ready was when I talked to him two or three days ago about it, he said, I would accept the responsibility but only if my teammates want me to. If theyre happy with me as a captain, Id be glad to be captain," Boudreau said. "He was already thinking about the team rather than thinking about himself, which is what captains do." "Im proud. Its a big honor for me. Im going to do my best, but still I dont want to concentrate on just having the C on my heart. Im going to do the same thing." -- Alex Ovechkin Clark wore the C for three and a half seasons, but when he was injured the last two years, sitting out a combined 114 games, nobody wore the C in his absence. Ovechkin had been an alternate captain since 2006-07. "I think if different guys on the team want me to represent the team it means a lot," Ovechkin said. "I have the trust and thats a very good thing." Boudreau told Ovechkin he was the choice Monday and then he informed the team Tuesday, but the Capitals kept it a secret until around 6:30 Tuesday night when Ovechkin emerged from the dressing room for warm-ups with the C on over his left shoulder. Ovechkin is already a two-time winner of both the Hart and Rocket Richard Trophies and the Lester B. Pearson Award. He also won Calder Trophy in 2006. "I think hes got all the qualities you look for in a captain, and to see that in someone so young is incredible," said former Washington captain Yvon Labre. "Hes been a leader since hes been here, and he leads by example. If he gets upset, you can see him start to take over a game. Theres no doubt hes deserving." Ovechkin said hes going to be more of a leader by example, but he wont hesitate to make his voice heard in the dressing room either. "We have lots of guys who can talk, but if I need to say something Im going to say something," Ovechkin said. "Im just going to show it on the ice and if I need to say something in the locker room, I will." Boudreau expects Ovechkins on-ice leadership to shine through, but the Capitals will still need someone else to replace everything Clark did off the ice, such as gather the team for functions. Clarks wife even took care of the rest of the players wives. "(Clark) took care of the room. Ovi is taking care of the ice," Boudreau said. "I cant picture Alex getting on the phone saying, Listen, we all have to be at dinner at this guys house. It just isnt going to happen." Contact Dan Rosen at: [email protected]. ' ' '
