Tennis Canada announced Wednesday the four players nominated to compete in the upcoming Fed Cup by BNP Paribas World Group II playoff between Canada and Belgium from April 25-26, 2009 at Grenslandhallen - Ethias Arena in Hasselt, Belgium. Fichman, 18 years old, has earned seven victories and one loss since she began representing Canada in Fed Cup play in 2005, with a 6-1 record in doubles. She is currently ranked No. 248 in the world. This tie will mark the third time Valerie Tetreault has been named to the Miele Canadian Fed Cup squad. Currently No. 310 on Tour, Tetreault has compiled a 10-5 singles record in 2009. Canadas top ranked female player is Wozniak who sits at No.29 on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour. Wozniak has compiled an impressive record of 27 Fed Cup wins and 4 losses. Her 21 singles victories constitute the best record in Canadian history. Wozniak has gained recent momentum, upsetting top-seeded Nadia Petrova last week in the semis of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, where she advanced to her third Tour final. Wozniak won Stanford last year and finished second in Fes, Morocco in 2007. Belgium currently holds a 2-0 edge against Canada, although both encounters were in the World Group consolation round when the event was under the former week-long format. The two previous ties were also contested on neutral ground. In 1969, Belgium defeated Canada 2-1 in Athens Greece, while in 1981 Belgium was victorious 3-0 in Tokyo, Japan. Belgium fell to the Slovak Republic in World Group II to set-up this match-up with Canada, who advanced after capturing Americas Zone Group I without dropping a set. Canada last competed in World Group II in 2007 in Kamloops, British Columbia when they fell to Israel 3-2. The countries that are victorious in the World Group II playoffs will secure places in the 2010 World Group II, while the losing nations will compete in their respective Zonal Group I competitions.
