CALGARY - The Calgary Stampeders poked their heads above the logjam in the CFLs West Division with a 42-5 thrashing of the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Monday. Steelers Rashard Mendenhall Jersey . Calgary (10-5) reclaimed the division lead, but was only two points up on B.C., Edmonton and Saskatchewan, all 9-6 with three weeks remaining in the regular season. "Weve got four teams who are really, really darn good and its going to come down to the photo finish here as to who gets first place and I sure as hell hope its us," Stampeders kicker Sandro DeAngelis said. Both Calgary and Saskatchewan had already secured playoff berths, but the Stampeders avenged a 37-34 loss to Roughriders in Regina on Oct. 3. The two clubs finish the season 2-2 against each other. Should they have identical records at the conclusion of this regular season, the Stamps would rank ahead of the Riders in the standings based on total points scored over the four games. DeAngelis made four of five field goal attempts, moving him into third all-time in Stampeder history with 172. Burris completed half of his 28 passes, but distributed the ball judiciously amongst his receivers and threw touchdown passes to Ken-Yon Rambo, Jeremaine Copeland and Nik Lewis. His back-to-back throws on the run late in the second half for Calgarys second touchdown gave his team an 18-4 cushion and the Stamps led 21-4 at the half. Burris also connected with Rambo and Lewis on passing plays of 81 and 85 yards respectively for touchdowns. Demetrious Summers scored his first CFL touchdown on a six-yard run late in the game in front of an announced sellout of 35,650 at McMahon Stadium. But Calgarys defence was the difference and made Roughrider quarterback Michael Bishops day a nightmare. Saskatchewans scoring was limited to Luca Congis 51-yard field goal in the first half and two conceded singles. Bishop played his best game in a Rider uniform Oct. 3 following his trade from Toronto in August, but nothing went right for him Monday. Bishop was sacked four times, fumbled the ball once and was intercepted three times. He completed 17 of 33 passes for 298 yards. He was hammered to the turf by Calgarys Dwaine Carpenter with 10 minutes to go, but remained in the game for a few more plays before he was replaced by Darian Durant. "Certainly he wasnt as sharp as he was the last game," Roughrider head coach Ken Miller said of Bishop. "Sporadically he was brilliant and then awful. "In order for us to be successful, he has to be consistent." Calgary safety Milton Collins, a 23-year-old rookie returning to the lineup after suffering a concussion in September, picked off Bishop twice in the end zone. Defensive back Lenny Walls, who spent last summer with the NFLs St. Louis Rams, had an interception and a team-high nine tackles in his CFL debut. "The defence as a whole played great today," Walls said. "Guys up front got pressure on the quarterback and the secondary, we gave up some plays, but we got the three big picks, we got the turnovers to shut all that down and thats what kept them from getting in the end zone." Calgary twice failed to get the ball into the end zone from inside the 20-yard line and settled for field goals on both occasions. But their inability to convert them into touchdowns wasnt as costly as it had been in their loss in Regina, thanks to the defence. "Our defence got them off the field and that allowed us to play with a short field to put the points up, touchdown or field goal," said Burris, clutching two-year-old son Armand in his arms following the game. "When our team is playing together like that and not killing ourselves with penalties and turnovers, we can be a pretty special team here." DeAngelis was successful on a pair of field goals from 43 yards, but also kicked a couple of short ones from 16 and nine yards out. "Its all about going out there and taking care of the ball, keeping their defence on the field and at least putting some points on the board," Burris said. "This time of the year is definitely when you want to make your run at peaking at the right time so it felt good to see the guys go out there and carry over the things that weve talked about in practice and execute the way we were supposed to." Calgary hosts Winnipeg on Saturday and the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, 42-11 losers to the Montreal Alouettes earlier Monday, are in Regina to face the Riders on Sunday.
